The Art of Travel Photography: Six Expert Lessons offered by The Great Courses, and taught by Joel Sartore, an award winning contributing photographer to National Geographic, covers technical skills and creativity!
Yes!
As an amateur photographer with enough lenses to bump me up to serious hobbyist, I loved Joel's photo course! I'm developing a more imaginative eye for composition and grasping complex photography techniques because Joel makes them understandable. Plus he emphasizes individual creativity over technology, which is heart-warming.
I have the capacity to get stymied with aperatures and f-stops like I get stymied telling my left from my right. (Especially when dancing, which can be complicated.) Aperature This. F-Stop That.
Small aperature. Wide aperature. And the light does, what?
The smaller the f-stop (example: f/2.8), the wider the aperature, and more light comes in. The bigger the f-stop (example: f/22), the smaller the aperature, and less light comes in. You get very different effects, which you can read about in professional articles or experiment.
Thank goodness, according to Joel -- creativity! -- is the key to unleashing a great shot!
Your photograph is a way of seeing and expressing your view of the world. From creative lighting to posing your subjects, Joel helps get us beyond the postcard to unexpected delights. With his tools, I've been having more fun with my camera.
After watching Joel's first lesson, I looked for interesting objects and angles to put into my sunset photo.
Make it creative, he said. Line people up in a way you may not have seen before. Impromptu, I shot this iPhone photo at the beach. More interesting than my standard sunset above.
Lighting can be a challenge but has become easier as a result of Joel's suggestions. He offers many creative lighting solutions for portraits indoors, outdoors, high noon, early morning, and sunset depending on the circumstances, and your desired effect.
