I woke up in sunny Southern California to learn that radiation from Japan arrived earlier than expected today.
We're told not to worry.
It's tiny amounts of radiation. We get more radiation just walking the dog, talking on a cell phone...
No one has mentioned a potential cumulative effect over a period of days/weeks/months? I guess they'd say the same "it's safe".
Maybe it is. I'm no scientist.
What happens if the third reactor with plutonium blows? (I read plutonium is heavy and unlikely wouldn't be carried by wind)
I don't feel like worrying, I feel like calling Obama and Governor Brown. I just did. To share how I feel about nuclear energy in California.
Be heard
To leave a message for President Obama: (202) 456-1111
To leave a message for California's Governor Jerry Brown: (916) 445-2841
We have old nuclear power plants sitting near fault-lines in earthquake country. I don't believe Obama when he says our 104 nuclear plants are safe. How can he know?
Obama wants to triple the $18.5 billion for new nuclear reactors despite accidents being inevitable, and Californias reactors built near fault-lines.
Obama and his energy secretary Chu are really a disappointment. And CNN and ABC haven't been reporting thoroughly. In fact, last night ABC Dan Harris interviewed several people from the nuclear industry who unanimously said everything nuclear in America is fine... One sided. Not true. In addition to accidents that you may or may not have heard of, you can read several "events" on the nuclear regulatory commission web site.
California nuclear reactors are near earthquake faultlines.
Winds blow. Waters flow. Earthquakes are inevitable.
If you're concerned about which direction winds are blowing, Satya showed me an informative web site called Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog.
Remember we're in a democracy so if you have a strong feelings about the nuclear issue, make your calls. To read more on what California can learn from Japan's nuclear tragedy, click here.
This will likely be my last piece on nuclear energy, as I switch gears toward discussing solutions to air pollution, clean energy, clean transportation and, my favorite, clean air destinations. Nuclear isn't clean therefore... bye to this subject. Others can do a good job. Others like Physicians for Social Responsibility.
