Casual elegance describes The Chrysalis Inn & Spa in Bellingham.
I found this award-winning spa to be a perfect location to rejuvenate when exploring the Pacific Northwest.
Voted as one of the top twenty inns in the world by Travel and Leisure Magazine, it won me over with its location on Bellingham Bay and environmentally-friendly strides.
Hardwood floors upon entering the building and my room was a great start.
Entire hotel is a smoke-free environment. A good-second.
And small touches throughout, including the Waste-Not recycling basket in each guest-room and the 'please consider the environment' notices suggesting we not wash sheets and towels daily. While this may be commonplace in many hotels today, it didn't used to be.
During my first stay at The Chrysalis in 2007 it wasn't common but what was common here was the "green" spirit. This inn employed an environmentally aware staff, and management implemented their green suggestions. With this open-door policy, I felt assured The Chrysalis would maintain and exceed "green" standards.
I found the modern architectural designed interior warm and inviting.
I especially loved their spiral wood staircase.
After the long drive from Victoria, including the B.C. Ferry to Vancouver and a drive through White Rock, I was ready for a big bath (huge bathtub) and relaxing bay views from the spacious room's window seat. The spa had closed before I'd arrived but had I been early, I'd have enjoyed the eucalyptus steam room.
In 2007, I'd first come to Bellingham at the recommendation of a friend who once lived here. He was a sailor and took advantage of the bay.
Plus the American Lung Association rated Bellingham high for clean air.
It's also home to the University of Washington, which happens to be the place where respected researchers published a report on health impacts of air pollution on post-menopausal women.
So, in the beginning I was curious about Bellingham. Now I am pleased to know Bellingham is a perfect place to hang out when traveling between California or Seattle (where I flew this time) and Canada.
It's got hiking, biking, kayaking, and the best of small city living.
Bellingham has an old town section called Fairhaven, which is a short walk from The Chrysalis. Here you'll find beautiful renovated old brick buildings resembling wild west saloons, good food including ethnic restaurants, music, art galleries, and harbor views. Fairhaven is a transportation hub and home to Amtrak, a bus station, and the Alaska Ferry Cruise Terminal. If you're taking off to a faraway land, I suggest enjoying fresh Bellingham air first.
When you come to Bellingham, do drive the famous Chuckanut Drive. You'll pass lakes, trees, and a good restaurant along this nearby windy well-paved road.
So if you love exploring the Pacific Northwest like I do, I highly recommend making a Bellingham a stop along your way.
If you decide to relocate to Bellingham, I recommend calling Bellingham realtor Doreen Colman. I met Doreen a few years back when she worked at The Chrysalis Inn & Spa and was impressed with her warmth, thoroughness, and desire to go the extra mile.
