One of these days, I'll write Chasing Clean Air, Finding Dirty Water. That's what I tell myself, and today an AP reporter wrote about uranium rich toxic groundwater in Nevada that had been covered up by industry and government officials.
Another reason why blogs like this are important in order to tell the truth when I/we find it. I stumble upon toxic truths on the road to clean air because locals generally know when there's a problem. People get sick or occasionally are told to evacuate.
While many areas on the road to clean air have better air quality than Los Angeles; suffering the consequence of industry dumping into soil and water is not uncommon.
Recently, without thinking I drank tap water while waiting for a ferry in Anacortes unaware I drank from a polluted area where ground water had been contaminated by industry. Currently this area is under a massive multi-million dollar clean-up. Photo is from one of the industrial sources next to the ferry landing on Fidalgo Bay where I boarded the Washington State Ferry (best ferry ride in the world) that took me to clean air in the San Juan Islands.
The dividends of chasing clean air frequently include finding dirty water.
