Canada's September Consumer Reports has an air purifier segment, worth reading.
They gave high ratings for The Whirlpool AP51030K ($300) and Hynter 30547 ($260), and Blueair 503 ($550) and 650E ($800).
I've had readers write, telling me their Blueair fixed wood-smoke seeping into house problem.
In the past, American Consumer Reports recommended the Friedrich air purifier, which I use in my Los Angeles livingroom. I use a Hamilton Beach in my bedroom. I don't love either. The Friedrich is big and noisy and occasionally dust gets inside and when it does a spark seems to crackle, which is a concern. The Hamilton Beach was recommended by a friend, but for me there's a slight smell that doesn't feel refreshing.
For cleaning the air of smoke, dust, and pollens... you may also consider replacing home air filters, removing carpets, opening windows unless pollens and smog in your area, and sealing leaks from windows and doors.
And buy plants, here are some recommended by NASA to clean the air.
Photo I just like... pigeons on a branch in Sechelt, British Columbia. They have no worries, just hanging out...
