The first Earth Day in 1970 drew enthusiasm from millions residing in New York to California.
As a result, Nixon formed the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, signed the Clean Air Act, The Clean Water Act, the Pesticide Control Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act, which all became law by the end of 1974.
You see, enthusiasm is contagious. Something we can all harness for the greater good.
This Earth Day April 22, 2009, I'm considering going beyond activist blogging and testifying, to commit to one big cause in an industry that has negatively impacted my lungs: Old trucks and school buses. I'd especially like to educate school kids about retrofitting diesel school buses so they don't pollute and why they need to get adults to act.
What can you start this earth day?
Here's a few events that caught my attention.
In Los Angeles, join the Sierra Club for the official grand opening and special Earth Day celebration of "Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet" on Wednesday, April 22 at 11:00am in the Rose Garden at Exposition Park (701 State Dr, Los Angeles, 90037).
Cool Globes is an outdoor art exhibit that highlights climate change and the simple things each of us can do in our everyday lives to prevent it.
The exhibit features more than 50 custom-designed 5-foot globes -- each depicting a solution to the climate crisis.
This "cool" exhibit will be on display at Exposition Park from April 22 through July 23, 2009.
The grand opening celebration is free, fun, family-friendly with entertainment, refreshments and a short program including a tour of the "Cool Globes."
To RSVP for the opening celebration, please email coolglobes@jtpr.com.
DisneyEarth is an awesome new film opening on Earth Day. When you go to this nature film during opening week, Disney will plant a tree in your honor.
"Earth" is narrated by James Earl Jones and tells the story of three animal families' journey across the planet. An epic adventure on the big screen.
